Cradle of humankind : Halong Bay Vietnam

 

On a cloudy and misty morning we board the Huong Hai sealife which will take us through the night to stay on the waters of the Ha Long bay

The name Ha long means descending dragon. Legend has it that the Vietnamese people were frequently attacked from the north . To help them , the Jade emperor sent Mother dragon and her children to help fight the enemies. The mother dragon defeated the enemies from the north through her divine fire and giant emeralds. They say that the remnants of these giant emeralds are the islets of Halong bay that we see today.

Halong-bay-4127Erosion caused caves in these rocks and this is todays Halong bay. Water flow through crack and crevices. When the water evaporated, the calcium deposits from the limestone in ceilings or from the ground creating stalactites and stalagmites

Halong-bay-4134Ha long bay is also considered as a cradle of humankind as several artifacts and fossils have been found of ancient human beings living as earlier as 18,000 - 7,000 years BC in the Neolithic age which is considered the last stage of stone age

Ghermann Titov, a former hero of the Soviet union in world war 1. During the war in Vietnam, Titov visited this island and as remembrance of the soviet support of North Vietnam , president Ho Chi Min named this island after him as Ti Top

Halong-bay-4259Half a billion years ago this was land and then it was flooded as a deep sea. Constant activity of tectonic plates created huge mountains in these deep seas. Further tectonic activity caused the entire mountains to rise from the depths. Biological remains of sea life created limestone deposits. Strong erosion cut through these mountains to form blocks of limestone protruding out of the waters. Its likely that many of these limestone rocks harbor fossils.
